Socks worn by Michael Jackson in the 1990s sold for $8,000

A sock worn by pop superstar Michael Jackson has sold for more than $8,000 at auction. The late pop superstar wore the sock during a concert in France in the 1990s, French auctioneer Aurore Ily told AFP.

Aurore Ily said a technician found the used sock discarded near Jackson’s dressing room after a concert in the southern city of Nimes in July 1997. It had been stored in a frame for 28 years before being put up for sale.

The self-styled ‘King of Pop’ wore white athletic socks during his History World Tour in 1997, according to the report.

Jackson has also been seen wearing the socks in clips of his hit ‘Billie Jean’.

A photo posted on the website shows the off-white sock covered in stains and the stones embedded in it have turned yellow over time.

“It’s a truly exceptional item – even a sentimental item for Michael Jackson fans,” said Elie.

The socks, originally estimated at between 3,000 and 4,000 euros ($3,400-$4,500), sold for 7,688 euros ($8,822) at the Nimes auction house.

This is not the first time that Jackson’s clothing, especially items worn in performances and music videos, have sold for huge sums. In 2009, a gaming resort in Macau bought the glittering gloves Jackson wore during his first “Moonwalk” dance in 1983 for $350,000.

In addition, the hat he wore just before that performance sold for more than $80,000 in Paris in 2023. That same year, a leather jacket the singer wore in a 1984 Pepsi commercial sold for more than $300,000.
