Science fiction has always talked about phones whose screens can be folded and changed shape at will. Samsung is making this idea a reality with its new ‘Galaxy Z Trifold’ phone.
The phone was recently showcased for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas, USA, although it has already been launched in South Korea on a limited scale. The phone will soon be available in the US market.
As the name suggests, the Galaxy Z Trifold folds into three parts—two folds, making it look like a folded brochure. When folded, it takes the size of a regular smartphone, but when opened, it becomes like a large tablet. Its internal screen size is 10 inches, which is larger than the 8-inch screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has one fold, the Trifold has two folds, providing more working space.
While the phone feels thin and light when open, it becomes slightly thicker when folded, which can create the feeling of holding two phones together. This can make using the phone a bit uncomfortable.
The price of the phone has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be very expensive, as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at around $2,000. The Trifold may be sold for a higher price than that.
According to analysts, this is an experimental initiative by Samsung. The phone is not for ordinary users, but rather it is a strategic test for Samsung, in which they want to know how a new type of phone is received by people. Liz Lee, associate director of Counterpoint Research, says that this is essentially a ‘strategic test’.
However, the importance of the phone is not small, because Samsung is one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers and their new products create new trends in the market. Samsung has previously made a similar impact with foldable phones.
Samsung said that the Galaxy Z Trifold is primarily designed to increase work and productivity. Its large screen can run multiple apps simultaneously, work on split screens, and run apps in separate windows like a desktop computer. By adding a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, it can also be used as an alternative to a small laptop, which is suitable for office work, writing, or making presentations.
The phone’s use of artificial intelligence (AI) has been improved, so that Google’s Gemini AI helps understand information from multiple apps open at the same time, Samsung claims that this will increase work speed.
Samsung has not compromised on the camera either. The Galaxy Z Trifold’s camera is as high-quality as the Galaxy S25 Ultra. There are two fold marks on the screen, but they are not very noticeable.
The global foldable phone market is still small and the price is very high, so its use is limited. However, almost all major Android manufacturers are currently bringing such phones, and it is rumored that Apple may also soon bring a foldable phone to the market.
All in all, the Galaxy Z Trifold may not reach everyone’s hands right away, but it is a reflection of the future of smartphones and Samsung is proving that smartphone development is not stopping.
